Losing Innocence, Keeping Virginity…Writers Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge.

“A library is a place where you can lose your innocence without losing your virginity.”

~Germaine Greer

Katrina put on her glasses, the red rims matching the underlines of her eyes. Without the glasses the world is a blur.

She visited the library twice each week to borrow books. She takes them home and locks herself for hours. Her mother had given up hopes that she will ever be rescued  from this addictive reading. She would read rather than watch movies.

She smiled to herself as she remembers the trick Mc Scotts used to get his bride into his bed. These characters were her true friends. She would never step her dainty feet in a club or take strong drink but she was a worldly wise young lady.

She got into the library and then head for a section. She saw a new quote hanged on the wall.

A library is a place where you can lose your innocence without losing your virginity.

She was a bit shocked, then she stared at the frame for a while and then understanding light in her mind.

I lost my innocence years ago when I read eroticas. When I can read about the gore killings in history and not flinch, Katrina thought to herself.

She saw the book on the shelf “An Encyclopedia about Sex and sexual health”. She borrowed this book and went home to read. All she has read so far were fiction, it was time to learn the real thing.

  1. Hello and welcome. Glad to see the prompt got your mind thinking… What a great quote and true, I think. Besides the sexual side, I can see “losing her virginity,” to mean gaining knowledge about the world that doesn’t exist in her own personal world. This quote really makes you think! ❤

  2. Interesting. I see losing innocence in this context as learning about the world outside of your box. Good job Deborah!
